SWG3, the internationally acclaimed arts and events venue located in Glasgow, is preparing for its first live music gig following significant expansion, which has seen the venue more than double in size.
Following a six-figure funding from Santander Business Banking, the venue has increased its capacity by 70% from 1500 to just over 2500 and been redeveloped to create more space for a reception area, a box office, and a spacious caf茅 bar and roof terrace. The substantial development means the venue can now host fully catered large-scale events, both indoors and outdoors.
The first live gig following the redevelopment will be on Saturday evening, 30 June, and performed by Candi Staton, the Grammy nominated artists best known for hits including 鈥榊ou Got the Love鈥 and 鈥榊oung Hearts Run Free鈥. The live show will take place in the Galvanizers, a new 6000 sq. ft. space with an impressive shed-style roof and exposed brick walls.
Andrew Mickel, Director at SWG3, said: 鈥淪ince purchasing the building in a derelict state more than decade ago, the vision has always been to create a thriving creative and cultural campus in Glasgow with everything under one roof; a place to see art, to listen to live music, and to enjoy good food. Thanks to the recent funding from Santander we鈥檝e been able to expand and elevate the building so it caters to all of this and more. The opening marks a significant milestone for SWG3 鈥 the first live gig in the Galvanizers 鈥 and we鈥檙e looking forward to welcoming everyone down for what is set to be quite a show.鈥
Len Marsh, Business Relationship Director for Santander Business Banking, said: 鈥淲e are delighted to be able to provide funding to support SWG3. Its mixture of artistic influence and a wide variety of musical acts makes this venue an independent and unique take on the well-trodden grounds of other well-known Glaswegian venues. We are extremely excited to see the new venue being used this weekend and expect an exceptional turnout.鈥
Located at Eastvale Place, SWG3 was purchased in 2005 by Andrew Fleming-Brown, and developed in a similar style to facilities he had been involved with in New York. Most recently, the venue has played host to Scotland鈥檚 only graffiti festival, Yardworks 鈥 as well as notable large-scale music events including LCD Soundsystem and The XX.
